How to Legally Sell Firearms Online in 2026

Selling a firearm online is legal in all 50 states — but the process must follow federal law. Many people are confused about what's allowed, what requires an FFL, and what platforms can legally host firearms listings. This guide covers the key rules and how Trigger Transfers handles compliance automatically.

Who Can Sell Online?

Any private individual who legally owns a firearm may sell it — subject to state laws on private party sales. However, selling firearms as a "business" (i.e., buying and reselling for profit repeatedly) without an FFL is a federal felony. The threshold is vague, but the ATF looks at factors like frequency, profit motive, and whether you're representing yourself as being "in the business" of dealing.

FFL dealers can sell freely within the scope of their license.

What's Required for an Online Sale?

  • The buyer must be legally eligible to own a firearm in their state
  • Interstate transfers must go through a licensed FFL dealer
  • The receiving FFL must complete ATF Form 4473 and run a NICS background check
  • You may not sell to prohibited persons (felons, domestic abusers, etc.) — even as a private seller

What You Cannot Do

  • Ship a handgun directly to a buyer's home (only FFLs can receive handgun shipments)
  • Knowingly sell to a prohibited person
  • Sell NFA items without going through the ATF Form 4 process
  • Sell a stolen firearm
  • Remove or alter serial numbers

How Trigger Transfers Handles This

When you sell through Trigger Transfers, compliance is built in:

  • Every buyer is ID-verified before they can contact you
  • All shipments route through licensed FFL dealers
  • FFL sellers are verified against the ATF EZCheck database
  • There's no way to complete a transaction that skips the background check process

State Laws Vary

Some states (California, Colorado, New York, etc.) require background checks for private party sales even within the state. Some prohibit certain firearm types entirely. Always verify your state's specific laws before listing.

If you're unsure, the safest approach is to route all sales through an FFL dealer regardless of whether your state technically requires it for in-state private sales. Trigger Transfers does this by default.
